John & Nanci's Trip to Red Cone

Grandpa and Grandma watched Ashley for the weekend so that we could go on a Quad-trip to Red Cone.  A 4-wheel-only trail that would take us above tree line.

Here we are at the peak of Red Cone.  One of our friends is waving in the background. Red Cone 1.JPG (177540 bytes)  The views from the top were awesome. Red Cone 2.JPG (151248 bytes)  Red Cone 3.JPG (166760 bytes)  We were well above tree-line.

We then went back down below tree-line to set up camp.

Nothing like camping next to a stream. Red Cone 6.JPG (252272 bytes)

While up in such beautiful country, Nanci decided to try to get some black and white photos. Red Cone 7.JPG (280953 bytes)   Nothing too spectacular came from them, but she did catch these mountain goats on film. Red Cone 8.JPG (202272 bytes)

The next day's plans were to pack up.  John cleans out the tent-- Red Cone 9.JPG (280497 bytes)   --the easy way.  Then we were off to Webster Pass and home,...or so we thought.

Once upon Webster Pass we found that it was still closed by a snow and ice drift 10 feet deep. Red Cone 10.JPG (214318 bytes)  We thought we would dig, but that could have taken weeks. Red Cone 11.JPG (204613 bytes)   So we all got our nerve up and decided to pull the Quads by the drift.  Several other men came along and helped us.  It took us 3 hours to get all of our Quads over the drift.  But we can say that we opened Webster Pass for the year of 2000! A FUN TRIP ALL IN ALL!
